Apple has released its newest tablet, the iPad mini 3, and it’s pretty much the iPad mini 2 with the exception of a few minor changes.
With a 7.9-inch display, the iPad mini 3 is a small screen tablet tinier than full-sized iPads but bigger than the biggest smartphones. Its closest competitor with regards to quality and size is probably Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4. So how do these two compare?
Let’s check them out.
The iPad mini 3 uses the same A7 dual core CPU with 1GB RAM as the previous model. Although this may seem a little disappointing compared to the Tab S’ Exynos 5 Octa e5420 quad core CPU with 3GB RAM, the 64-bit Apple CPU is one the fastest chips around. According to many iPad mini 2 users, it is faster than the Tab S in almost every way, meaning that the mini 3 is faster too.
The iPad mini 3 boasts a more generous range of storage options compared to the Galaxy Tab S 8.4. Unlike Tab S which comes with the sole 16GB storage option, iPad mini offers 16GB, 64GB and 128GB options. One advantage of the Samsung though, is the ability to carry a microSD card which can take the storage beyond that of the top mini 3 model.
The iPad mini 3 has inherited the exact size and weight of the iPad mini 2. Measuring 7.9×5.3×0.29 inches and weighing only 11.6 ounces, this iPad is definitely tiny and lightweight but not as tiny and lightweight as the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 tablet. The Tab S 8.4 measures only 0.26 inches thick and weighs 10.4 ounces. Unfortunately, the chassis of the Samsung Tab is made of plastic while the Apple tablet is made of aluminum. This gives the iPad a more premium feel.
The iPad mini 3 features the same 2048×1536 Retina display as the mini 2, meaning that everything from text to photos and videos will look as clear and crisp as before. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy Tab S rocks a stunning 8.4-inch, 2560×1600 Super AMOLED display. Although the Samsung’s screen exaggerates a few colors, overall, it offers a better viewing experience.
The new iPad mini gets the same 5MP camera as the previous generation mini which means that its camera would be as wonderful as the iPad mini 2. For its part, the Galaxy Tab S features an 8MP rear camera and a 2.1MP front camera. According to many iPad mini 2 users, its camera captures more accurate colors than the Galaxy Tab S 8.4’s, though details are roughly the same. So the new iPad will definitely have a slight advantage here.
As always with such comparisons, everything will ultimately boil down to the OS used by the tablet. The iPad mini 3 runs on iOS 8 while the Samsung Galaxy Tab S runs on Android KitKat 4.4. The iOS is better than Android OS on tablets, thanks to superior optimization and a vast selection of tablet-specific apps.
Both the Apple iPad mini 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.4 are impressive gadgets in their own rights. For USD400, you can get the 16GB iPad mini 3 tablet, which is exactly the price of Tab S 8.4. So compare the aforementioned features and then choose the tablet that meets your needs.
