Free Calling Apps – Download and Make Unlimited Phone Calls

Why are phone calls so expensive?

The answer to this question has to do with the way phone lines are constructed. The technology that made telephones communicate 100 years ago is the same one we use today. In fact, if you could plug in an ancient telephone from that era into your landline wall socket, it would work perfectly.

It all essentially comes down to analog versus digital signal. Analog signal is the way of recording data as a complex wave, which tends to lose quality the longer the distance it travels. This explains why in old movies you often saw two people talking over the phone yelling and still barely being able to hear each other. Simply, because of the great distance the signal had to travel, its quality would distort to the point of becoming unusable. On the other hand, digital signal transmits data as a stream of numbers, which is much more resistant to those problems. The old infrastructure mentioned above uses an analog signal to transmit data (your voice), however, it is quite inefficient at doing so.

What Is VoIP and How Does It Work

Even though analog signal transmission was inefficient, phone companies could actually make a lot of money off of it nonetheless. It worked well enough for them, so why should they improve it? This was all about to change with the introduction of Internet and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

In short, VoIP takes analog data, turns it into digital, transfers it over the Internet with great ease and turns it back into analog on the other side. The only requirements are two devices that can convert a human voice into digital data, an Internet connection, and software that connects the conversation partners. Since VoIP software is freely available, with this method it’s possible to bypass the international phone charges altogether.

Which Free Calling App Should You Use

There are plenty to choose from, but some are better than others are. In general, the only requirement for all of those apps is that both parties must have the app installed on their phones and establish a connection through them. Viber is an excellent app, since it allows you to make unlimited voice calls and text messages to anywhere on the planet, as long as you both use it. Other apps include Fring, Nimbuzz, Qik, Skype, Tango, ooVoo and many others. Which one you choose is really just down to your personal preference.

If you are a person who is always on the go, mobile apps like Viber, KakaoTalk, Line, and others might be more useful to you. These are very light apps that run smoothly on mobile. They are great for phone conversations across the globe. But if you want high quality video calling or video conferencing, you might opt for the trusted Skype or ooVoo. Skype has great HD-quality videos that prevent images from pixilation. This ensures that you will be able to see the other person clearly.

VoIP has changed telephone communication to the point of seriously threatening the monopoly telephone companies used to hold on the way we interacted with each other over long distances. The secret was that telephone companies were already using VoIP to reduce costs, by routing thousands of phone calls with it. Yet, the prices for data remained the same as they were when the data was transmitted the old-fashioned way.

VoIP is just another example of how both Internet and sharing of ideas has changed our daily lives. Without the price restriction, it’s now possible to hear and share more than ever before, all for a fraction of a cost it would have taken 20 years ago.
