Galaxy S5 vs iPhone 5S vs HTC One M8 vs Xperia Z3 – What To Choose This Year?

In this comparison we are having some of the best devices released on the market confront each other. One thing these devices have in common is the fact that they are all great individually and that they recently benefited from a price cut, making them a little more accessible for users looking to replace their older devices.

Design and Display

The HTC One M8 comes with the same aluminum body design that was used for the One M7, which won the award for best smartphone of 2013, handed out at the MWC congress. The device comes in an aluminum body that reaches airplane-grade quality. In terms of display, the One M8 comes with a 5 inch screen that uses a pretty high resolution, giving it full HD status. It uses the LCD 3 technology and a 440 ppi pixel density.

The Moto X also comes with a nice design for its body, keeping “premium” as the key word. It also follows in its predecessor’s footsteps, and just like the One M8, it does a pretty good job. Part of the phone’s success on the design part is due to the metal frame it has around the edges. The display that it comes with has a 1920 x 1080 resolution and uses the OLED technology, all packed within the 5.2 inch screen.

You can probably guess what we’re about to say about the Galaxy S5 from Samsung, as the manufacturer has used the same standard design it has used for previous devices. The rectangular handset features a dust and water resistant body which gives it the edge in some people’s book. The S5’s screen measures 5.1 inches and uses the Super AMOLED technology at a 1080 x 1920 resolution and 432 ppi pixel density.

The Xperia Z3 from Sony features the Triluminos and X-Reality technologies bundles up in its display which measures 5.2 inches and has a full HD status, given its 1920 x 1080p resolution. As for design, the body has a slimmer profile, although with only 1 mm, than the Xperia Z2. The handset features the Omni-Balance design for its body.

The iPhone 5S features one of the most premium-looking designs available, as Apple has gotten us accustomed to. The handset comes with the aluminum body which makes the device have a solid feel to it. The screen this body is wrapping itself around measures 4 inches and has a 1135 x 640 resolution combined with a pixel density of 326 ppi. The front panel is also the home of the TouchID fingerprint scanner.

Hardware and Software

According to GSM Arena, all these devices come with internal configurations that deserve our attention. Each is pretty good on its own, but which one of them is the absolute best? Let’s see what each of them is packing.

The Moto X, Xperia Z, HTC One and Galaxy S5 run on Google’s Android operating system and come with almost identical specifications. The processors that come with these devices are branded Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 and are quad core units. Also, the devices use 2 or 3 GB of RAM as support. The graphics are handled in all four cases by the Adreno 330 GPU. The clock speed is the same for all devices, 2.5 GHz.

On the other hand, Apple’s iPhone5 is different from the rest and runs Apple’s own iOS operating system which comes with its own perks and weaknesses. The device itself features the A7 processor, also made by Apple, on a 64-bit architecture, accompanied by the M7 co-processor. The device has only 1 GB of RAM.

The iPhone 5S has only 8MP, but exploits its hardware and software into a stable ecosystem that allows the camera to do much more in terms of performance that it seems capable of. The Android device leading the category is clearly the Xperia Z3 from Sony which features 20.7 MP and a ton of options that complement the high-end lens. The Galaxy S5 is far behind, but still number 2, with 16 MP available, making its shooter able to shoot truly HD content. The Motorola device has 13 MP, while the HTC One comes with a different system, so it’s more complicated to put it against the rest. It has 4 MP for the rear shooter, but operates on the UltraPixel technology. The device also uses the dual camera setup for the rear.

The weakest battery here belongs to the iPhone 5S which uses a 1570 mAh unit to power up its components. The 2300 mAh battery of the Moto X is above it, but below what the Galaxy S5 offers with its 2800 mAh. Between these two, we have the HTC One with its 2600 mAh unit. However, the largest battery overall belongs to the Xperia Z3, which packs a 3100 mAh juice supplier under the hood.

On, you can find these devices with the following approximate prices:

iPhone 5S- $550

Galaxy S5 – $510

Xperia Z3 -$635

HTC One- $685

Moto X – $400
