Google Hangouts – Tips to Make your Hangouts a Breeze

Google is one of the leading internet companies in the world.

It has many services to offer, one of them being Google Hangouts. Google Hangouts makes it easy for users to communicate since you do not need video conferencing amenities. The reason for this is that the amenities come in-built so you can make video calls and conference calls at any given time. Here are some useful tips that will help you get the most out of this service.

Keyboard Shortcuts

When using Google Hangouts to make video calls, you can use some keyboard shortcuts. When on a video call, you can mute/un-mute the microphone from the keyboard. That way, in case someone walks in when you are on a call, you can mute the microphone. These shortcuts also allow you to turn the webcam off and on. To see the shortcuts available, tap on the question mark displayed in your video hangout.

Chat Commands

Chats are useful, especially when you share information or links with people who are participating in a hangout. The chat pane offers more than data sharing. You are able to send private messages to someone in your hangout. If you are the one receiving the private message, you can choose to either reply to it as a private or public chat.

Use Headsets

If you have been using Hangouts for some time now, you might have realized that there are some times when the connection is not very clear. If your calls have echo, use headsets to make the calls clearer. Headsets give you better sound quality on both the sender and recipient’s side.

Mute Microphone

If you are not participating in any hangout, you should mute your microphone. Muting makes the microphone clearer because it reduces background noises. To mute the microphone, use the microphone icon at the top side. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + D to mute. You also have the option of muting a hangout participant by clicking on an arrow that is next to that person’s profile.

Limit Bandwidth Use

If you realize that the hangout video and sound quality is poor, it could be as a result of a slow internet connection. It can also be as a result of a slow computer. Correct such a problem by limiting bandwidth usage. Your bandwidth usage options range from ‘AutoHD’, which is the one that uses the most, to ‘Audio only’, which uses the lowest bandwidth.

Inviting Participants to Your Hangouts

You can invite as many participants as you would like. However, you are limited to 10 people for video calls. If you want a higher limit, you will have to activate Google+ premium. The other groups of people who are allowed a higher number include accounts like Google Apps for EDU or Google Apps for Business.

You also do not have a limitation when it comes to the number of people you can make voice calls to. You will, however, be charged when making mobile or landline calls.
