Skype comes across as the ideal voice and video calling messenger.
It is available on both the leading mobile operating systems, namely Android and iOS as well as many others listed later in this piece. Skype uses your mobile service provider data bundles or Wi-Fi connection to facilitate online chats. It enables free Skype to Skype calls and affordable local and global calls to non-Skype users.
Step 1: Install Skype
Skype is available for free for both the Apple and Android devices. In order to comfortably run on the Android devices Skype should be installed on version 2.1 or a more advanced one. Skype is compatible with the iOS devices such as iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone. The Apple devices should be on at least version 4.0 and above.
The Android users enjoy two versions of Skype. There is one that is called “Skype for Android” and another known as “Skype Mobile for Verizon”. The latter does not support placing domestic calls but allows international calls over both Wi-Fi and 3G connections. The former supports both local and international chats.
Step 2: Set Up your Skype
Once you have installed Skype on your device get started by tapping the Skype icon in order to open it. If you are a new user, you will have to sign in first. But for those who already use Skype on their PCs and tablets, they can sign in using their Skype usernames and passwords.
After a successful launch, Skype will ask you to synchronize your Skype account with your contact list. You have the options to synchronize all or part of your contact list. It is important to synchronize all your contacts because this will allow you to import your phonebook contacts into the Skype app for easy retrieval.
On the settings menu, you can set up your Instant Message (IM) preferences as well as choose if you want your Skype to launch automatically once you start your phone.
Users of Apple devices must possess a Skype account in order to log in to Skype on their mobile devices. This is done by use of a username and password. The iPad users cannot create a new Skype account on their devices using the Skype app but can create a new account by visiting the Skype website where they will be allowed to set up an account.
After successfully setting up your Skype account, proceed directly to your contact list where you can connect to your favorite friends and family. The contacts are arranged in alphabetical order in order to be accessed quickly.
Step 3: Make a Call
With Skype on mobile devices, you can conduct either Skype to Skype calls or Skype to non-Skype calls. Skype to Skype calls are free for unlimited data plan users like Wi-Fi and broadband while Skype to non-Skype calls are billed at affordable rates. In the US, you are charged $ 0.019 every 60 seconds.
For the Android users all they need to do is select their contact list and choose Skype then pick one contact to call. For iOS users, go to your contact list on the upper left hand corner and select “Contacts”. Go to the next screen and choose Skype contacts after which you will select a contact you want to call. Tap it and start your video conversation.
Skype is not like your regular internet service provider that has area codes. You will have to manually pick your country code. Skype will charge you per-minute for using its mobile app. With your keypad, you can enter the number of the recipient directly and place your call. Alternatively, you can choose a number from your phonebook and dial.
Skype is available on internet enabled televisions, Symbian, iOS, Android, Linux, Windows and Mac operating systems.
