However, the iPad Mini 3 has a smaller screen size, so that pixel density is better at 326 ppi, whereas the iPad Air 2 has a lower pixel density of 264 ppi. However, the screens of both the devices are clear and very crisp. The bigger screen of the iPad Air 2 is more suitable for viewing movies or YouTube or playing games, but the iPad Mini 3 offers the benefits of portability.
Performance, Hardware Specs Compared
There is a difference in the power of the two devices, due to the difference in the internals. The internal specifications of the iPad Mini 3 are quite similar. The iPad mini 3 comes with the A7 process and an M7 co processor, similar to its predecessor. On the other hand, the iPad Air 2 is powered by the A8X processor combined with an M8 Processor. Both the devices are quite powerful enough and come with 64 bit, so they are both future proof. However, the iPad Air 2 has the capability of handling heavy tasks, such as heavy graphics based games and is capable of running several apps at the same time.
Both the tablets run on the latest OS from Apple, the iOS 8 and will be updated to the iOS 9 the coming year.
Both the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3 come with similar connectivity options. Both the devices have a Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor present under the home button. The price also increases if you want to by the 4G-connectivity version.
Capacities and Storage
The two devices are offered in similar capacity options, namely, 16GB; 64 GB and 128 GB, as the built in storage options.
Most people don’t like to use a tablet for taking pictures, as it is a little large and unwieldy. However, you have to consider this factor as well, if you are planning to use the tablet for taking pictures. The iPad Air 2 has a better camera of 8 MP, whereas the iPad Mini 3 has a smaller resolution of 5 MP. However, the Mini 3 is smaller and more suitable for taking pictures. Both the devices come with all the other features, such as face detection and autofocus and so on. The Quick Fire Burst Mode is an additional feature available in the iPad Air 2. Both have a front camera of 1.2 MP and can capture videos at 720p resolution. Video recording with the primary camera is at 1080p resolution HD.
As far as price is concerned, the iPad Mini 3 is naturally available at a lower price, saving you about $60 dollars or so. However, you need to consider whether you need portability or a bigger screen.
