Apple finally realized that it was about time to release a bigger smartphone, to get in line with other companies that have been creating mid-tier phones for a while. The iPhone 6 is a beauty and delivers a great performance, but in this article, we’ll compare it with Sony’s Xperia Z3 Compact, another great device.
Designs, displays and dimensions
Every iPhone released by Apple has a unique look, but each model gets improved and the iPhone 6 is really a masterpiece, although it uses the same aluminum chassis. However, there have been made a few changes – the edges are more rounded and the rear camera lens is protected with sapphire glass against scratches. The device comes with the useful fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button, it measures 138.1x67x6.9mm and has a weight of 129grams. Its display is sized at 4.7inches (LED-backlit IPS LCD), but it can’t support a resolution higher than 750x1334pixels, with 326ppi.
The Xperia Z3 Compact is easy to hold, although it’s thicker than the iPhone 6. It measures 127.3×64.9×8.6mm, but has the same weight. The rear panel and the front panel are protected with shatter proof glass and the phone is also water and dust resistant. The 4.6inches triluminos IPS LCD display has about the same resolution, but it’s slightly lower, at 720x1280pixels, which gives a pixel density of 319ppi.
After some tests, the iPhone 6 demonstrated that it has better viewing angles, while the Z3 Compact has a better contrast when viewing videos.
Hardware and OS
The iPhone 6 comes with the new A8 chip which hosts a dual core 1.4GHz Cyclone processor, which couples with a PowerVR GX6450 quad-core GPU and 1GB of RAM. There is also a motion co-processor that transforms the iPhone 6 into a fitness tracker. The low RAM capacity is felt sometimes, when switching between many open tabs or when loading too many webpages.
The Z3 Compact is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 quad-core 2.5GHz Krait 400 processor and uses an Adreno 330 GPU with 2GB of RAM.
The iPhone 6 has unexpandable variants of internal memories of 16/64/128 GB, while the Z3 Compact comes with 16GB of storage that supports expansion up to 128GB.
The Z3 Compact runs on Android v4.4.4 (KitKat), but in the near future, it will be upgraded to v5.0 (Lollipop). The iPhone 6 runs on Apple’s iOS8, but a new update has been released in between, 8.1.
The rear camera on the Z3 Compact is outstanding, having a resolution of 20.7MP and featuring ISO sensitivity of 12,800. It can’t capture videos at 240fps like the iPhone 6, but it offers 4K/UHD resolution video recording. The 8MP rear camera from the iPhone 6 might not draw your attention, but in reality, Apple improved it and it’s no longer taking blurred photos. The front camera on the iPhone 6 is 1.2MP, while the Z3 Compact sports a 2.2MP secondary shooter.
The Z3 Compact is kept alive by the 2,600mAh battery for 920 hours in stand by mode, and offers up to 14 hours of talktime on 3G or 30 minutes of GPS navigation. The iPhone 6 has an 1810 mAh battery with a lifetime of 250 hours in stand by mode, and provides 14 hours of talktime.
The Z3 Compact can be turned into a portable PS4 and you’ll be able to use WiFi to stream your library of Playstation 4 games.
On Amazon, the price of the Xperia Z3 Compact is 508 dollars, while the iPhone 6 can be bought from the Apple Store and the 16GB variant with a two-year contract costs 199 dollars, while the contract-free variant costs 649 dollars.
