The smartphone market saw an array of changes in the trends being followed by various companies to boost their sales.
The smartphone manufacturers have made it their habit to release a smaller version of their flagship handset. The release of ‘Mini’ versions of their successful bigger variants entered the market with a huge round of applause. Samsung released the Galaxy S4 Mini and a year later, the Korean giant released the Galaxy S5 Mini. How do these two mini smartphones compare to each other, let us find out.
Design and Build
When compared to the Galaxy S5 handset, the Galaxy S5 Mini variant looked the same. However, the same holds true for Galaxy S4 Mini, when compared to its elder sibling, the Galaxy S4 handset. Regardless, the trend followed here as well in terms of the size. The Galaxy S5 Mini is a bigger handset than the GS4 Mini variant.
The GS5 Mini measures 65 x 131 mm and is heavier and thicker at 120 grams and 9.1mm respectively. However, the GS4 Mini handset measures 61 x 125 mm and weighs 107 grams. The GS4 Mini comes at a thickness of 8.9mm. The differences are small, but differences nonetheless.
However, both handsets come in plastic casing and similar color options. The GS5 Mini takes the edge with I67 certification, making it water and dust resistant handset.
The GS5 Mini, being a bigger handset comes with a 4.5-inch display. However, the 4.3-inch smaller screen of the GS4 Mini variant comes with a resolution of qHD 540 x 960 pixels. The resolution gets a boost in the GS5 Mini handset at HD 720 x 1280 pixels. As a result, the pixel density also increases from 256-ppi in the GS4 Mini to 326-ppi in the GS5 Mini handset.
Both the handsets come equipped with the Samsung’s Super AMOLED display.
Processor and Memory
The Snapdragon 400 processor from Qualcomm having dual cores, running at 1.7GHz powers the GS4 Mini handset. The GS5 Mini gets a quad core processor, with all four cores running at 1.4GHz speed. However, both the handsets incorporate a similar RAM of 1.5GB.
The small upgrade to the GS5 Mini aims to offer decent performance to the user.
With respect to storage, the GS4 Mini offers the user with internal storage capacity of 8GB. It practically doubles in the GS5 Mini handset, offering a 16GB internal storage capacity.
However, both handsets come equipped with microSD card slots for memory enhancement up to 64GB.
The addition of Fingerprint scanner and the heart rate monitor in the GS5 Mini handset might swing your decision in favor of the smartphone.
The GS4 Mini handset runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean operating system, which is updated to 4.4 KitKat. However, the GS5 Mini comes equipped with pre-loaded KitKat and latest of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI.
Both the handsets encompass removable batteries. However, the GS5 comes with a bigger battery having a capacity of 2100 mAh. The upgrade has been made from the 1900 mAh battery equipped in the GS4 Mini handset. However, the heavy processor and the higher resolution display of the GS5 Mini variant offers similar battery life as that of the GS4 Mini handset.
The GS5 Mini variant comes with reasonable upgrades in terms of software, storage, components, water and dust proof design. The inclusion of fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor makes it even more in demand.
