Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Xperia Z1 vs LG G2 – Top Specs, Features and Price Comparison

In 2014, Sony released the Xperia Z1, a great smartphone with an incredible camera and a good performance, but which had to demonstrate its qualities in front of its competitors – LG’s G2 and Samsung’s Galaxy S4.

Displays and sizes

The Galaxy S4 and the Xperia Z1 are equipped with 5inches displays that are able to offer an identical resolution of 1080×1920 pixels and a pixel density of 441ppi. But each company is using a different type of technology, which means that the display from the Galaxy S4 is Super AMOLED and benefits from Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, while the Xperia Z1 is using a TFT display that is covered with a shatter proof glass. The good thing about the Sony device is that it’s the only one between the three that comes with dust and water resistance, being IP58 certified. The LG G2 is using a True HD-IPS + LCD display of 5.2inches, with the same resolution, but because the size is bigger, the pixel density had to be decreased down to 424ppi.

The Galaxy S4 is the thinnest device at 7.9mm, being the shortest one in the same time, measuring 136.6mm, and has the lowest weight – 130grams. The Xperia Z1 is the heaviest at 170grams, but it’s also the tallest – 144grams. The G2 is the thickest smartphone at 8.9mm.

Hardware and OS

The Xperia Z1 and the G2 carry the same quad core Krait 400 processor, but the first one is clocked at 2.26GHz, and the second one is slightly weaker at 2.2GHz, but they sit on the same Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 chipset along with an Adreno 330 GPU. The Galaxy S4 is powered by an Exynos 5 Octa 5410 octa core with two processors that have four cores: 1.6 GHz Cortex-A15 and 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7. Samsung used PowerVR SGX544MP3 graphics for this model and added 2GB of RAM to the internal memory of 16, 32 and 64GB, with the possibility to expand the first two ones up to 64GB. The other models have too 2GB of RAM, and in terms of memories, while the Z1 allows you to expand its storage (16GB) up to 64GB, the G2 limits you to 16 and 32GB. The G2 and the G4 came with Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean), and were upgraded to v4.4.2 (KitKat), while the Z1 came with v4.2 (Jelly Bean) and got upgraded to v4.4.4 (KitKat), but soon it will run on v5.0 (Lollipop).


The Xperia Z1 is the proud owner of a 20.7MP back camera loaded with tones of features – LED flash, autofocus, HDR, 1/2.3” sensor size, touch focus etc. The other two phones are fitted with 13MP back cameras with similar features, but the G2 has in addition optical image stabilization to solve the blurry photos problem. The front cameras are kind of the same on all three devices, having resolutions of 2MP and 2.1MP.


The G2 and the Z1 have non-removable batteries with the same capacity – 3000mAh, but on the G2 you’ll talk 17 hours and a half on 3G, with 2 hours and a half more than on its rival. The 2600mAh battery from the Galaxy S4 provides up to 17 hours of talktime.
