Samsung is one of those companies that release a flagship and a few months later, a mini version with a weaker performance, but identical in terms of design. It depends on your wallet, if it’s filled with cash or you’ll have to settle for the more affordable smartphone. The Galaxy S5 and its mini version are both amazing smartphones and in this article we’ll list their specifications to get an idea about them.
Designs and displays
The Galaxy S5 is famous for its perorated rear panel and the smaller version is no different from it. However, the mini variant is 1mm thicker than its bigger brother, measuring 9.1mm and it’s 10% narrower than the Galaxy S5. The difference of size is significant, of 25grams, which means that the Galaxy S5 Mini weights 120 grams and the Galaxy S5 weights 145 grams. Regarding the displays, they’re both Super AMOLED and their sizes are: 5.1inches on the Galaxy S5, whose resolution is 1080x1920pixels with 432ppi, while the Mini variant has a 4.5inches screen with a lower resolution of 720x1280pixels and a pixel density of 326ppi, just like the one that is supported by the iPhone 5S.
The larger device is packed with a powerful quad core 2.5 GHz Krait 400 processor which is backed by a Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset, while the smaller version uses a totally different combination of a quad core 1.4GHz Cortex-A7 processor with a Exynos 3 Quad 3470 chipset.
The mini variant houses 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, whose capacity can be increased up to 64GB. The Galaxy S5 has 2GB of RAM and two variants of internal memories of 16 and 32GB, with the possibility to add a microSD card and get up to 128GB.
The S5 mini has a 2100mAh battery with almost 10 hours of talktime, while the Galaxy S5 has a bigger 2800mAh battery which should provide up to 21 hours of talktime.
If the number of pixels matter to you, then the 16MP back camera on the Galaxy S5 will draw attention, but remember that the quality of a photo has nothing to do with the resolution, and the result is influenced by the features added to the camera. And the Galaxy S5 has LEF flash, phase detection, HDR and other features that are found on the mini variant as well. But the rear camera from this model has a resolution of 8MP.
Both models come loaded with 4.4.2 KitKat, augmented with TouchWiz UI and you’ll be able to download any of the 1.2 million applications from the Google Play Store.
There is a fingerprint sensor on both devices, as well as a heart rate sensor which is located under the back camera. To extend the battery life, Samsung introduced the Ultra power saving mode which shuts down unnecessary applications or services when the battery runs out of juice. Also, both Samsung products are water resistant.
