Samsung released its flagship this spring, while the Nexus 5 was released last year. Many said that the Galaxy S5 has serious challengers such as Sony’s Xperia Z2 or Apple’s iPhone 5S, but thanks to its high end specs, it has real chances to stand in front of its competition.
Designs, displays and sizes
The Nexus 5 has a simple design – rubberized chassis available in white, red and black colors, with round corners. The Galaxy S5 used the dotted pattern which looks kind of odd but unique in the same time, and the phone has a faux metallic frame.
The Galaxy S5 has a larger Super ANOLED display of 5.1inches, which supports the same resolution as Nexus 5’s 4.95 inches True HD IPS+ display, but in terms of pixels, the second phone takes the lead with 445ppi, compared to 432ppi, supported by the S5. Anyway, both displays are covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and the interior and exterior of the S5 are also protected against dust and water. Plus, this device features a fingerprint button, which is hidden into the home button. The Samsung flagship measures 142×72.5×8.1 mm and has a weight of 145grams, with 15grams more than the Nexus 5, whose dimensions are 137.9×69.2×8.6 mm.
Hardware and OS
Both devices are using the same quad core Krait 400 processor, but S5’s CPU has a higher clock speed of 2.5GHz and its backed by a newer Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset, while the Nexus 5 is equipped with a Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 chipset and has its processor clocked at 2.3GHz. As for the graphics, both devices are using an Adreno 330 GPU. Both devices provide two variants of internal memories of 16 and 32GB, but only the Galaxy S5 allows you to add a microSD card and expand their capacities up to 128GB. There are 2GB of RAM on each device, but they run on different Android versions. The Galaxy S5 operates on v4.4.2 (KitKat) and the Nexus 5 has v4.4.4 (KitKat), but it will be upgraded to v5.0 (Lollipop) sooner than its rival.
The Galaxy S5 wins this category too, because of its advanced 16MP rear camera with its Lytro camera-like refocusing app and other great features, while the Nexus 5 offers only an 8MP rear camera with optical image stabilization as an extra feature. The S5 can record 4K videos, which is a big leverage. Also the secondary camera is better at 2MP, compared to 1.3MP secondary shooter on the Nexus 5.
The Nexus 5 has a non-removable battery and with a smaller capacity – 2300mAh, which lasts 17 hours when talking on the phone. S5’s 2800mAh battery lasts 4hours more.
The Galaxy S5 16GB variant can be purchased with a two-year contract under any American carrier and you’ll pay only 80 dollars on it. Without a contract, the device costs 649 dollars. The Nexus 5 is priced at 389 dollars on Amazon.
