Setting up Gmail for Microsoft Outlook

Did you know that you can set up Gmail on Outlook? This in itself seems rather confusing as these email providers are two completely different companies with Google and Microsoft not exactly being the best of friends either. However, it is possible and all you need to do is follow a few rather basic instructions.

Configuring Gmail.

First, you need to configure your Gmail so that it will work with Outlook. In order to do this, you need to work with something called Imap, but this is more straightforward than you think.

What you need to do is to log into your Gmail account and click on that gear symbol that is in the top right hand corner of the page. This is going to open up and you then need to select the settings option in the list and wait for another window to pop open.

Next, you must look for the option that says Forwarding and then look for POP/IMAP and click on it. This is going to bring up yet another screen and this is the settings part for IMAP. At this point, you must click on enable IMAP and then make sure that you save these settings before proceeding to the next step.

Configuring Microsoft Outlook.

Next, we need to skip over to Microsoft Outlook as there are a few steps to take in order to configure this part of the program so that everything then works nice and smoothly. Open the program, and then click on File in the menu followed by Account Settings.

When the account settings box pops open, you need to set up a brand new account, so go ahead and click on New. After this, you will need to click on the Email Account option and then click next. Once this has been done, you should select either the Manual Setup, or Additional Server Types and then choose next. This is where you will then see the POP and IMAP options, so select it and hit that next button yet again.

Now, you will have an Add Account page and this is where you need to enter some vital pieces of information. Enter your display name, your full Gmail address, make sure Account Type says IMAP, the incoming mail server says imap.gmail.com and the outgoing says smtp.gmail.com, then simply enter your Gmail address and password then click more settings.

Next, select the Outgoing Server option and click on My Outgoing Server and then click to use the same settings as the incoming option. Click on Advanced and enter 993 in the Incoming Server box, SSL for the type of encryption, 465 for Outgoing Server, and SSL yet again. Click OK, then next, and wait while Outlook goes ahead and tests the connection. If it all works well, then click Finish and you are good to go.

So you need to:

  1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail by going to settings.
  2. Open a new account on Outlook via the Account settings tab.
  3. Use the email account option and then manual setup.
  4. Choose IMAP and then enter the relevant information in the add account page.
  5. Copy those settings on the outgoing server page.
  6. Allow Outlook to test the connection before using.

As you can see, this is easy to do and everything will then work perfectly as long as you have indeed entered the correct information. Setting up Outlook to work with Gmail takes just a matter of minutes and you need next to no technical knowledge in order to do this. Go ahead and give it a try and see if you can get it working at the first time of asking.
