Sony has regained the honor of producing decent smartphones with the launch of the Xperia series.
However, following the trend prevalent in the market, the company released a compact version of its flagship handset, the Sony Xperia Z1. Nonetheless, the Xperia Z1 Compact made quite an impact on the market. It came in direct competition to Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini smartphone. Let us evaluate both the handsets to determine which smaller version is worth spending your hard-earned money on.
Display and Design
With respect to display, both the handsets comprise of 4.3-inch screens. However, the difference lies in terms of resolution offered by both the displays. The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact offers a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and a pixel density of 342-ppi. On the other hand, the S4 Mini smartphone offers a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and a much lower pixel density of 256-ppi.
The Sony compact handset includes a TFT display panel, whereas, the Samsung Mini handset comprises of a Super AMOLED screen.
With respect to design, the Sony handset is heavy and thick, coming with the following dimensions: 127mm x 64.9mm x 9.5mm. It is due to these dimensions, the handset weighs approximately 137 grams. However, the handset is also heavier due to it comprising of dust and water resistant feature. On the contrary, the Samsung handset weighs approximately 107 grams and comes with the following measurements: 124.6mm x 61.3mm x 8.9mm.
Hardware and Memory
The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact comprises of a powerful Krait 400 quad core processor, clocked at 2GHz. In addition, the MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 chipset from Qualcomm powers the Xperia Z1 Compact handset. The graphic processor, Adreno 330, along with a RAM of 2GB ensures smooth functioning of the handset. The smartphone comprises of internal memory of 16GB, which can be expanded up to 64GB. On the other hand, the Galaxy S4 Mini comprises of a dual core Krait processor along with a 1.7GHz MSM8930 Snapdragon 400 chipset from Qualcomm. In addition, the graphic processor, Adreno 305, along with 1.5GB of RAM ensures flawless working of the smartphone. The S4 Mini comprises of 8GB of internal memory, which can be expanded up to 64GB.
With respect to the operating system, both the handsets come equipped with the Android Jelly Bean operating system. However, the Xperia Z1 Compact incorporates a version 4.3 as compared to the version 4.2.2 of the S4 Mini handset. However, they received the KitKat update. As a result, the Z1 Compact runs on version 4.4.4 and makes use of the Xperia user interface. However, the S4 Mini has been updated to version 4.4.2 operating system and makes use of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI.
The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact integrates a non-removable Li-Ion battery unit of 2300 mAh capacity. The battery offers the user a talk time of 18 hours on 3G. However, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini handset comprises of Li-Ion 1900 mAh battery unit, providing 12 hours of talk-time on 3G.
In terms of price, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact handset can be availed at a price of $425. However, the Korean giant released the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini handset at a price of approximately $297.
