Sony was one of the top mobile phone makers only several years ago, but they have slipped of late.
The split from Ericsson appears to have allowed the company in making top class mobile phones once again. They have been doing well in the past few models that they launched. They appear to have pulled the trick once again with the Sony Xperia Z1. This is set to be the flagship model for the company for the next few months at least. It will be supported by the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact.
The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is a smaller model that – as its name suggests – will be meant for being compact. This phone achieves this primarily by reducing the screen size. Sony has done a great job to retain most of its high-end features like waterproofing and dust proofing in the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact as well. The Sony Xperia Z1 was one of the first high-end smartphones in recent years to feature this aspect, which made protecting the phone much easier than before.
Both phones can be submerged in water for almost 30 minutes. This will be a major boon to users, who are in the outdoors more often than not. The phone comes with IP58 certification, which has also resulted in a couple of disadvantages.
In order to protect the phone from getting damaged when submerged in water, Sony has sealed almost every open port on the device. This includes the USB port, charging port, and so on. For someone who does not take the phone to the extremes often, it becomes a really difficult aspect after a while to keep opening the ports in order to access them. Further, the bulk of the phone has also been increased both in terms of weight and thickness.
Apart from reducing the screen size, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact also benefits from the lower resolution. However, the pixel density is almost similar to the one provided by the flagship model. The Sony Xperia Z1 comes with a very big 5-inch display that appears to be the standard for high-end Android smartphones. It also features full HD resolution compared to the 720p of the lower end cousin.
Easily, one of the standout features in the Sony Xperia Z1 and the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact will be the 20 megapixel camera at the back. Apart from being able to capture excellent low light pictures, this camera also translates into great shots everywhere. The added megapixel count means that even cropped images look excellent on a large screen. Both decisions come with full HD video recording capabilities, which are aided by the presence of video stabilization modes.
Being the larger device, the Xperia Z1 features a much larger 3000 mAh battery compared to the 2300 mAh unit on the Xperia Z1 Compact.
Since both of them came out at different times – the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact being the latest – the cost roughly on the same $ 500 mark.
