Sony had launched the Z3 series at the IFA 2014 held in Berlin during the month of September.
The Z2 was released six months earlier and the Z3 replaces the Z2 as the company’s new flagship phone. Let us see the improvements on the Z3 in comparison to the Z2.
Both the Z2 and the Z3 have the same aluminum combined with glass design, but there are some changes in this area. The Z3 is slimmer at 7.3 mm thickness, whereas the Z2 was a little thicker at 8.2 mm. However, all the other dimensions of the two phones are almost similar. The Z3 is also lighter at 152g compared to the 163 g of the Z2. The Z3 is more rounded, whereas the Z2 is a little sharp around the corners. The nylon at the corners of the Z3 also helps protect the device if you drop it accidentally. The Z3 comes in more color options like copper and silver green, along with black and white, whereas the Z2 comes in the usual black and white along with purple. Both the phones offer dust and water proof features, but the IP rating for Z3 is higher, so it offers better protection.
Screen and Display
Both the Z3 and the Z2 come with a 5.2 inches full HD and a resolution of 1080p. However, the screen of the Z2 is brighter and it offers better visibility when viewed in the direct sunlight.
Hardware and Other Specs
The Z2 and the Z3 come with the same RAM of 3GB, but the processor has been changed. It is the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, but the Z3 has a higher clock speed of 2.5 GHz, compared to the 2.3 GHz of the Z2. Due to the new processor, the Z3 has a better battery and is more efficient. The size of the battery in the Z3 is also a little less at 3100 mAh, compared to the 3200 mAh.
The Z3 comes in 16GB and 32 GB variants, whereas the Z2 is only available in the 16 GB model. However, the Z2 has a micro SD card for expanding storage up to 64 GB. In case of the Z3, the micro SD card supports additional storage up to 128 GB.
The Z2 and the Z3 come with a 20.7 MP resolution primary camera, with single LED Flash. However, the Z3 has an additional 25 mm wide-angle lens. It also comes with an ISO 12800, so that results in low light conditions are better in the Z3, compared to the Z2. The front facing or secondary camera in both the devices are the same at 2.2 MP.
Additional Features in Z3
The Remote Play is a new feature in Z3, enabling users who have the PlayStation 4 to play games on their mobile phones; similar to the way they play using the PS Vita. The function works on Wi-Fi and uses the DualShock 4 controller or you can opt for a GCM10, as a Game Control Mount.
Another new feature found in the Z3 and absent in the Z2 is the High Resolution audio feature. This feature makes the Z3 the very first smartphone that is capable of supporting DSD playback. Both the devices come with noise cancelling capabilities. When this feature is combined with the High Res audio feature, it makes the Z3 one of the best phones if you are an audiophile.
Both the devices are not cheap and come with high end features. They both offer a premium package, but the Z3 being a latest release, it has some additional features and improved functionalities.
