Surface Pro 2 vs. Surface Pro 3 – In-Depth Analysis of Performance and Battery Life

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 2 was claimed to be the tablet comprising all.

Clearly, that was not the case. However, Microsoft leaped forward and launched its next-gen Pro 3 tablet in the Surface Pro series. Nonetheless, the Pro 3 release came with yet another claim from the company declaring Pro 3 tablet the best replacement for PC and laptop.

Going by the trend, most smartphone manufacturing companies would have opted for smaller tablets for the users. However, Microsoft adopted a different path and designed a bigger tablet than its previous offerings. The Surface Pro 3 tablet is a bigger device than its predecessors, Pro 2 and the original Pro device.

Available since June 2014, the Pro 3 tablet aims to fulfill the claim made by Microsoft to be the best possible replacement for PCs and laptops. Is it a marketing strategy or Microsoft has created a tablet relinquishing the need of a PC or laptop, let us evaluate.

Processing Unit

The hard work of designers at Microsoft is shown in the toned body of the Pro 3 device. Their hard work paid off and Pro 3 comes out to be a slimmer tablet than its predecessors. Whether any sacrifices have been made in terms of spec sheet and features to bring the Pro 3 into slim shape, let us assess. The company from Redmond spent much time in detailing the latest Pro 3 tablet. Clearly, the company has left nothing to chance with the Pro 3’s launch. The tablet is ready to encounter what is thrown its way.

The Pro 3 has been successfully incorporated with the slimmest Intel Core processing unit. In addition, the Type Cover affixed to the tablet enhances the claim in bold letters. Regardless, the Redmond Company was successful in designing a method to incorporate the slim Pro 3 with even a slimmer, yet powerful Intel Core based i7 processing unit. It is a praiseworthy effort by the company.

In comparison, the Pro 2 release from Microsoft topped the charts, equipped with the state of the art Intel Core based fourth generation i5 processing unit. On the other hand, Microsoft offered the Pro 3 in three variants ranging from the lowest Intel Core i3 to the mediocre Intel Core i5 to the highest Intel Core i7 processor options. The user would have an option to choose a tablet suiting their requirements and budget. The three variants of Pro 3 are available at three different prices.

Last, but not the least, the Pro 3 successfully took its ‘fan less’ theory to new heights. The Pro 3 is claimed by the company to offer up to 30% more efficient cooling system than the other available offerings from various companies.

Battery

A responsive and quick processing unit would require additional battery power. However, that is not the case with the Pro 3 tablet. The tablet is claimed to offer up to 20 percent more battery power than its predecessors. The no compromise mantra of the company holds true against all odds.

The Pro 3 encompasses an improved battery life, lasting up to 7 to 12 days, without usage. When Pro 2 is put to use, the battery life lasts up to 7 hours with moderate usage. However, the enhanced battery of the Pro 3 lasts up to 9 hours with moderate usage.
