Windows 8.1 mobile devices have been dominated in terms of sales by Nokia which is now owned by Microsoft. Samsung decided to step in and built its own series of Windows 8.1 phones.
The Ativ S Neo is a premium phone that comes with some interesting hardware specs and the latest mobile OS from Microsoft. Let have a quick look beneath the hood.
Windows 8.1 mobile is known to be an OS that does not a lot of RAM and a powerful CPU to run well. Samsung managed to make the most out of 8.1 with a mediocre CPU and a modest quantity of RAM and still the phone works flawless.
We are talking about a Krait dual core CPU running at 1.4 GHz. The CPU is able to handle the OS and the animations are seamless. Applications load quite fast but demanding games and apps reveal the CPU bottleneck.
Samsung went for 1GB or RAM and fortunately a Windows phone does not need more than that. Due to the low resource requirements by the OS there is always enough RAM to run several apps at the same time.
Internal storage is limited to 16GB. Samsung did not bother to make additional versions with 32GB or even 64GB. However the phone does come with an expansion slot that support Micro SD cards of up to 64GB.
The 4.7 inch display has a resolution of 720 by 1280 pixels and a density of 308. Images and movies look crisp clear while the colors are properly saturated. Looking at it from a realistic perspective, people won’t notice the difference between 720p and 1080p on a screen this big.
It is worth mentioning that the phone comes with a 2G/3G and 4G module. It comes with all the standard gimmicks such as an accelerometer, compass and NFC. The back of the phone hosts the 8 megapixel camera while the frontal one has only 1.2 megapixels but that should be enough to take some decent selfies… if there is proper lighting.
The Good, The Bad… And The Beautiful…
The Samsung Ativ S is a great looking phone with discrete chromed lines and high quality materials used throughout the case. However it is a bit thick. The smartphone has a thickness of 9.1 mm and feels a bit heavy with its 144 g weight. Even with its thickness the Ativ looks and feels like a premium phone but how much is a phone like this worth?
Sadly the Ativ S is generally sold for $600 which is not cheap at all. Some might say that it is even a bit overpriced for its specs. For this kind of money you can get a much more powerful Android phone but if we are talking about Windows phones than the Ativ is probably one of the better models available on the market. Like with other Windows phones the Ativ does have its benefits.
We are talking about built in support for Microsoft Office files and applications, free one drive storage, built-in support for Skype and many other perks. The Ativ S is a smartphone that works best in a business environment or with people that like to be productive on the go.
