Every messenger is now competing to find a place in your smartphone and besides these, there are millions of other apps and games looking forward to entertain you, keep you productive and more.

The biggest player in the market for now when it comes to text messaging is Whatsapp. Even though, we do have Kik, Wechat, Kakao Talk and other messengers, they are not as popular worldwide as Whatsapp. It is the popularity that attracted Facebook and encouraged them to purchase it in the first place. But, can it actually be better than the Google Hangouts which has seen considerable improvement is recent times and is growing more with every update? Let’s explore the features.

Google Hangouts

Google Hangouts has an upper edge against Whatsapp because of almost every user having a Google account around the globe. Be it your friends or a client, they will have one. The only drawback is that it is not readily available on feature phones yet; but still you could cover more than half of the world and communicate with everyone easily. For our comparison, we can skip the voice calling features as this is mostly about the text messaging.

You will be able to use it on multiple devices using the same account whereas it is not possible with Whatsapp. Apart from Windows, iOS, Android and other major platforms, Hangouts is also available on Mac, Linux, Web versions which makes it more versatile. It has SMS and location sharing features.

Whatsapp is definitely a crowd favorite, even though it limits your usage by keeping you within the same phone number all the time. The interface is good, it is available on almost every phone on earth and it is familiar with most users which makes it easy to access. Despite all these good features, it asks your phone number to let you message on the internet whereas Google Hangouts uses only a username which makes it more privacy friendly.

Each one of them has their own set of pros and cons, but when you bring out all the features that Google has to offer, Hangouts is definitely the superior of the two and it not just win against Whatsapp but also against the voice calling app Viber. If you need to just text without much features, Whatsapp is the best; but for everything else including video calls, Hangouts is your suitable option for many reasons.
