A lot of people looked forward for the Motorola Droid Turbo and for a good reason. The specs of the phone are impressive but it has flaws that many other phones managed to overcome. Motorola Droid Turbo does come with a few surprises but does it have what it takes to earn the title of the best phone on the market?
The Moto Droid Turbo is one of the most powerful Android phones on the market. We are talking about a quad core 2.7 GHz Krait 450 CPU with 3GB of RAM and an Adreno 420 GPU chip. It can handle any application on the market in terms of requirements which is a big plus.
Other features worth mentioning are the phone’s display and the camera. The Droid Turbo has a 5.2 inch display with a density of 565 ppi which is probably the highest on the market. This means a resolution of 1440 by 2560 pixels. Motorola also went for an over the top 21 megapixel camera which is also a plus.
The first thing that can be said about the Droid Turbo is how mediocre its design seems. A 3 year old Samsung Galaxy S3 feels a bit more polished and more pleasant to the eye in terms of visual aspect. Also because of the thick and heavy 3900 mAh battery the phone feels a bit bulky. It is heavy and thick and one would think that a thicker would be a bit cooler but it is not. The Droid Turbo gets extremely hot when used for more CPU intensive apps. This raises a big question mark in terms of battery lifetime as high heat can damage a battery.
Another aspect worth mentioning is the lack of compatibility with new apps. The phone uses some fairly new hardware and so far a lot of popular apps do not yet support the phone. Before getting one it is important to check if the phone is compatible with the apps that the buyer wishes to use on it which brings us to the next point which is ease of use and bugs. This is a rather interesting problem since Google owns Motorola. Everyone would expect a flawless phone at least from a software perspective. That is not the case with the Droid Turbo. Stock Android is not as friendly as some might think. The camera software is rather difficult to use and the phone freezes when using certain built-in apps.
The Bottom Line
The Motorola Droid Turbo is a great phone but it is far from being the best. With its large battery and bulky design the phone will not feel comfortable when using it with one hand or holding it into a pocket especially after running a few applications since it gets extremely hot.
For an enthusiast Android user the phone surely lacks in terms of design and software optimization. The stock Android version has a few bugs that have not been fixed yet and they can affect the overall user experience. There are plenty of phones out there that perform better, have fewer bugs and have been released long before the Droid Turbo. The Droid Turbo is actually what everyone expected from Moto X. One of these phones should have remained on the drawing board.
