With all this fuss regarding Microsoft’s HoloLens, you might think that there is only one virtual reality headset out there, but in fact, Samsung is preparing to bring its version of this kind of headset soon enough. In fact, Samsung has already released the Gear VR, which can be currently bought from Samsung or BestBuy’s website at a price of 200 dollars.
However, in order to have an idea about how this Gear VR works, you really need to wear it and check it for yourself. It is good to know that the Gear VR works ONLY with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and it doesn’t come with a display. Actually, you will use the Galaxy Note 4’s display in order to see. You will have to literally connect the Galaxy Note 4 to the headset, by plugging it in the front of the Gear VR lens and from there you will start seeing things at a 360 degree. The Gear VR comes with a 1-year warranty and it usually takes around 1 week to arrive to destination.
Samsung teamed up with Oculus to create the Gear VR, which proves to be quit a good device and many people want to get their hands on it. It is good to know that Oculus was bought by Facebook back in July 2015. Likewise Oculus Rift, Samsung’s Gear Rift will bring a fully 360 degree image in front of you. When you will move your head, this causes the camera to follow you, which will give you a virtual reality feel.
At the same time, Sony has its Project Morpheus virtual reality headset, which is very similar to Samsung’s Gear VR. The only difference between Gear VR and other virtual headsets such as Oculus Rift or Morpheus, is that it needs the Galaxy Note 4 to work.
With other words, this headset actually is very similar to DodoCase VR or Google Cardboard, and the only difference is that they use iPhones or some Android devices to bring the virtual reality to you at a very low cost. However, Gear VR uses only one single device, it costs 200 dollars. Well, at least the device looks cooler than the other two, which are made from a cardboard. However, it is good to know that the Gear VR comes with volume buttons and select buttons to help you browse your device settings with ease. It comes with an USB 3.0, where you will plug in your Samsung Galaxy Note 4. You have the option to not use the USB cable, but if you don’t use it, the buttons from the Gear VR headset will not work.
On the other hand, Microsoft will most likely release their HoloLens by the spring of 2015 for the developers, while the consumers will most likely be able to buy it shortly after that.
