Samsung Galaxy S5 may not have reaped the sales the company had projected, but it’s still one of the best smartphones there is today.
It has been up and running for quite some time now and there are cases where you might find yourself in need of more storage space.
It is possible to create more storage space on your Galaxy S5 and accommodate more files on your device. However, this can be very tricky, especially if you have lots of files you want to store on your device since the space required here is a bit larger. No matter what the situation is, you can free up some space on your Galaxy S5 by following these tips.
Delete unwanted multimedia files
Even though this looks like the most obvious solution, you probably don’t know the amount of space you can get by simply deleting some of your unwanted music and video files as well as pictures from your Galaxy S5. One example is the files from instant messaging apps like WhatsApp, Viber or Facebook Messenger which are all saved on your device.
There are some apps you can set to delete media after a certain period while in other cases, you will have to manually search for these files and delete them. To do this, go to “Apps>My files” and tap on any file that you want to remove, be it an image, video or audio file. Follow it by tapping and holding on these files and then hit the trash icon in order to get rid of them. It is also possible to select multiple files and delete them at once.
Cloud storage
This is another recommended solution for freeing up storage space on your Galaxy S5. Using an Android cloud storage app, you can create automatic backups of your files any time. What this means is that whenever you feel like deleting a file from your device, you can go ahead and do it since there is a backup stored in the cloud.
Depending on the cloud storage app you use, you’ll come across different methods of creating backups. But for the case of Dropbox, go to Settings and switch on “camera upload.” All photos that you take will be saved in the app and in the process it will save you a substantial amount of storage space.
Remove unwanted apps
The number of apps installed on your device has a massive effect on the storage of your device. Rather than installing an additional app like with the above case with a cloud storage app, you can think about uninstalling unused or unwanted apps from your Samsung Galaxy S5. If there is any game that is installed on your device and you never play it, remove it and free up some space for other fresh content. You can always download any of these apps in case you need them again.
Use an external microSD
The good thing with Samsung Galaxy S series smartphones is that they come with a slot for expanding the memory storage of the device. In essence, this is another hard drive for your Galaxy S5, which means you can transfer all of your multimedia files from your phone’s storage to the external SD card. In order to move media files from your smartphone to your SD card, go to “Apps>My Files” and tap on the 3 dots located at the upper right corner. Select “Move” in order to transfer the files from the S5 to the SD card, which is of course inserted in the phone.
Clear applications data
Applications keep hold of lots of data. This data keeps piling up with continued use of the application and as such, the memory of your phone keeps being used up. You can clear this saved app data and save yourself some significant memory. However, there is a catch.
Android apps save all of your “stuff”, for instance, browsing preferences and habits, and in turn think of them as your personalization. This means that whenever you re-enter the app, it recognizes you and picks up from where the last session stopped. This data is good for the apps you use on a daily basis, but at the same time it can be damaging if it stays there for months.
In order to clear your apps’ data, go to “Settings>Application manager” and tap on any app. On the following page, tap on “Clear data” and you’ll have your phone’s storage memory back.
