WhatsApp is more popular than any other application, but it’s early to tell if its success will remain untouched for a long time, because there are many attempts to its throne and every day, new messaging applications are showing up, offering better features and options. The app market is getting wider and wider and the customer demands are becoming more existent. That’s why the developers must please every category of users, to bring applications that allow them to chat for free, to make voice calls and why not… video calls. Currently, WhatsApp supports Voice Calling on three platforms: Android, iOS and BlackBerry 10 OS and the developers are trying to improve this feature. Telegram is an application with a different purpose: its users can send multimedia files of up to 1.5GB and they’re exchanging messages encrypted end-to-end an, self-destructing messages.
While WhatsApp was launched in 2009 and it evolved gradually, being currently used by over 800 million active users, Telegram was launched in the summer of 2013 and it has over 60 million users, with 220,000 people registering every day. WhatsApp is free to use only in the first year, then an annual charge is applied. Telegram promises to stay free forever and will protect its users better than WhatsApp. How come?
Telegram is an application that focuses on the concept of end-to-end, making conversations very safe, because they self destruct after the recipient reads them. This means that the hackers don’t have time to break the system and read the messages. You can set a timer to automatically delete conversations after the time expires, even if the messages are first saved on the smartphone and Telegram’s server (temporary). WhatsApp saves messages on an external server and hackers find it easier to break the application server security and they spy on people’s conversations, steal data etc. And let’s not forget about the spammers that send links to generate traffic and to make money by fooling their victims.
On Telegram, users can send media files of up to 1.5GB, while on WhatsApp, the limit of size is 16MB. Regarding the sign up method, both applications require a phone number in order to verify the created account, but Telegram can be a standalone application that can be installed on computers and tablets, while WhatsApp has a web feature that works with three web browsers: Chrome, Firefox and Opera.
So, which application is better? WhatsApp supports voice calling, but it has a weaker security protection, while Telegram is used only for chatting, and the conversations can be programmed to self-destruct after they’re read. Which one do you prefer?
