The Taiwanese computer hardware and electronics company made its comeback with a smartphone that stole all glances at CES 2015. The Zenfone 2 was the first smartphone to support up to 4GB of RAM, and today it was released in Taiwan, following to be shipped worldwide. In 2014, Asus released ZenFone 4, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 6, three budget-friendly devices with great specs. Many IT websites praised them and compared them with other famous smartphones, but these models were more appreciated in Asia, where manufacturers like Xiaomi are trying to conquer all mobile markets. In our opinion, Asus did a good job with its phones, giving them a pleasant design (plastic back with curved edges and an aluminum band below the screen) and equipping them with Intel Atom processors which offer a decent performance. The weakest model between them had a 5MP back camera, while the most advanced device provided a 13MP camera. The new Zenfone 2 has also a 13MP main camera and the front shooter was improved, featuring now a resolution of 5MP. Its design suffered important changes. First of all, the back panel has a brushed metal design, the power and volume buttons were moved from its sides to the back, being placed below the camera, reminding us of LG’s G3 flagship.
The Zenfone 2 ZE551ML measures 152.5×77.2×10.9 mm, its weight is 170 grams and its screen, which is an IPS, measures 5.5inches and renders 1080×1920 pixels at 403ppi, it’s protected with the previous version of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and runs on Android v5.0 (Lollipop), but soon, it will be upgraded to the 5.1 version.
Internally, it hides an Intel Atom Z3580 chipset built on 64 bit architecture and supporting a quad-core 2.3 GHz processor and has two variants of RAM capacities: 2GB and 4GB, but they’re combined with the three variants of internal memories: 16 and 32GB expandable up to 64GB, and the third variant is 64GB, unexpandable. The battery is 3000mAh and promises to offer a decent lifespan.
The Zenfone 2 ZE500CL model is the low-end variant with a 5inches HD screen, 2GB of RAM and a Intel Atom Z2560 processor clocked at 1.6GHz, which is powered by a 2500mAh battery. The price of this version is 158 dollars without a contract. The Zenfone 2 ZE551ML with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage will cost 318 dollars.
