Here are three smartphones that were released in 2014 and created some buzz, each one being the successors of other famous models. One thing is for sure: all three companies chose the best hardware configuration, displays and cameras, to make their products worth the money.
Designs
The LG G3 comes with a plastic chassis with a polished metallic design, and the back is fingerprint resistant and the form of the device is like a floating arc, for a better grip. The bezels are slim am there are no buttons on the sides, being moved to the back, below the camera. You can remove the back cover and change the battery if it starts to have a reduction in lifespan. Anyway, this device has a thickness of 8.9mm and weights 149grams, supporting wireless charging.
The Galaxy S5 was the first Samsung smartphone to feature a perforated back cover which looks like a bandage, according to some analysts. However, the frame has a faux leather look and on the front panel you’ll find a home button which hides the fingerprint scanner. The device is water and dust resistant, has a removable shell and the battery can also be replaced. It’s slimmer than the LG G3, measuring 8.1mm and has a weight of 145grams.
The HTC One M8 has a more attractive design, featuring a brushed aluminum unibody and it’s taller than the HTC One. On the front panel, below the screen was placed the black HTC logo, and at the top/at the bottom are situated the speakers. It is a lot thicker and heavier than its opponents, measuring 9.4mm and weighting 160grams.
Displays
The biggest display is owned by the LG G3 and measures 5.5inches, being a Quad HD IPS screen with 2560x1440pixels at 538ppi, but LG developed a technology that helps the battery to not drain so fast, by underclocking the processor when it doesn’t need to run intensive applications. The Galaxy S5 comes with relatively smaller screen of 5.1inches (Super AMOLED) which is able to support a lower resolution of 1920x1080pixels at 432ppi. The HTC One M8 features an IPS LCD display of 5inches which has the same resolution as the Galaxy S5, but supports a better pixel density of 441ppi.
Processors
All three devices are powered by a Krait 400 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, which has four cores, and they’re using a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset (MSM8975AC for LG G3 and Galaxy S5 and MSM8974AB on HTC One M8, which is from the previous series), with Adreno 330 graphics. All three phones come with 2GB of RAM and 16/32GB of internal storage, expandable up to 128GB, but the LG G3 coupled the higher memory capacity with 3GB of RAM.
Cameras
The Galaxy S5 has the camera with the higher resolution – 16MP, which benefits from 0.3 second autofocus, 1/2.6” sensor size, 1.12 µm pixel size, HDR etc, and supports video recording at 2160p@30fps, just like LG G3’s 13MP primary camera, which has OIS+ and a phase detection/ laser focusing sensor. The HTC One M8 has a much weaker back dual camera of 4MP (Ultrapixel) with dual-LED flash and 1/3” sensor size + 2µm pixel size. However, this model has a better front camera of 5MP, while the other two have snappers of 2-2.1MP.
