The LG G3 was chosen by many experts in the technology world as the best android smartphone in 2014.
LG introduced innovations with the G3 and it put the company on the map. The challenge was to deliver a new flagship, one that is even better and more perfect. So, with that question in mind, let’s break down whether LG made huge and dramatic improvements or just some cosmetic changes.
Design and Display
The design is the section where LG upgraded its flagship by at least two levels. What was already a great phone is now a premium, sleek and luxurious looking LG G4 thanks to the leather back. The phone is also unique, as no other phone (except for the Moto X) has leather on its back. The leather is stitched, and then glued on the back, which gives a more luxurious and stylish feeling. The back of the G4 is available in four colors: red, black, grey, dark brown, light blue and sunny yellow. The display is still the same 5.5 inches QHD display as in the LG G3, but the company made some improvements in the technology. With the new improvements, LG claims the display will deliver 20% brighter colors and better contrast.
Hardware and Operating System
The Snapdragon 801 that LG used in the G3 is now a Snapdragon 808 for the G4. The LG G4 is the only flagship on the market with a six core chipset. But that doesn’t have to be a weakness, as LG claims that the processor is fast and efficient. The LGG3 was available in two versions, with 16 GB of built in space and 2 GB of RAM, and 32 GB internal storage and 3 GB of RAM. The entry level of the G4 now starts at 32 GB with 3 GB of RAM. There is no word whether a 64 GB version will be available. But that might not be needed as the G4 still supports microSD card, same as with the G3. There is a huge jump in the OS, as the LG G4 will come with the Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box and be one of the few flagships with the latest OS.
Camera
When it comes to dramatic improvements, look no further than the camera. LG kept the optical image stabilization, but improved the way it works. Additionally, the rear camera is now a 16-MP sensor that should produce much more details. The G3 had a 13-MP sensor. But the biggest improvement is in the front facing camera. The selfie snapper was one of the weaknesses of the LG G3 with just a 2-MP sensor. But things have changed, as LG has placed an 8-MP sensor on the front of the G4 with some nifty features that guarantee better selfies.
