Samsung increased the size of its devices gradually, satisfying both groups of fans – those who like smaller devices – especially women, and those who want to enjoy a better experience on a much larger screen, on which they can view videos, play games and do many other things. We have two suggestions that might draw your attention – the Grand 2, which was launched two years ago, in November, and the Note 3 Neo, which came at the beginning of 2014. Here’s how they stack against each other.
Designs, displays and dimensions
If you don’t know how to differentiate these devices, you might confuse them, because both have a back panel with faux leather and fake stitching on the edges. But you must look closely at the shape of the phones, especially at the corners, because the Note 3 Neo has a rectangular body with rounded corners, while the Grand 2 tends to have a floating arc design, with more rounded corners. In terms of dimensions, the Note 3 Neo is thinner at 8.6mm and has a height of 148.4mm and a weight of 162.5grams, while the Grand 2 is 8.9mm thick and 146.8mm tall, and it weights 163grams. However, the Note 3 Neo offers a S Pen stylus just like the Note 3 premium phablet. Also, its display is Super AMOLED and measures 5.5inches, supporting a resolution of 720×1280 pixels at 267 ppi. The Grand 2 has the same resolution on its 5.25 inches TFT screen, but the pixel density is denser at 280 ppi.
Hardware
The Note 3 Neo used Samsung’s Exynos 5260 hexacore processor consisting in a quad core Cortex A7 CPU running at 1.3GHz and a dual core Cortex A15 CPU running at 1.7GHz, which are backed by Mali-T624 graphics and 2GB of RAM. The Grand 2 is a a mid-range handset featuring a Qualcomm MSM8226 Snapdragon 400 chipset which is powered by a quad core Cortex-A7 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. The graphics are Adreno 305 and the RAM capacity is 1.5GB. Both phones have internal memories that support expansion up to 64GB, but the Grand 2 has an internal storage of 8GB, half of what the Note 3 Neo offers. Bothe devices came loaded with Android v4.3 (Jelly Bean) and now they’re running on v4.4.2 (KitKat).
Cameras
These handsets have identical cameras on their backs, supporting a resolution of 8MP, and they share the same features: LED flash, autofocus, touch focus, geo tagging and video capture at 1080p@30fps. But the Note 3 Neo offers in addition HDR and its front camera is slightly better at 2MP. The Grand 2 has a secondary front camera of 1.9MP.
Batteries
Both batteries can be removed, but the one on the Note 3 Neo is much bigger at 3100mAh and lasts up to 18 hours when making calls over 3G. The Grand 2 has a battery of 2600mAh with a lifespan of 17 hours, when talking on 3G.
Prices
On Amazon, the price of the Note 3 Neo is 400 dollars, while the Grand 2 costs 225 dollars.
